Proud to share several breakthroughs from my lab at the Technion

#1 Robotic Chemistry for Precision Nanomedicine

In my lab at the Faculty of Biomedical Engineering, Technion, we developed an automated system that designs and produces nano-capsules for targeted drug delivery to cancerous tumors. This robotic platform identifies optimal stabilizing materials based on the drug’s light-emission properties (AIE effect), enabling efficient and safe encapsulation. Using this system, we discovered a novel stabilizer, 595R, created through a green chemistry process. It offers high drug loading (90%), stability, and enhanced safety. In pre-clinical models, nano-capsules based on 595R showed strong therapeutic effects on solid tumors with common cancer mutations.

This work was led by the principal author Yuval Harris (PhD student), in collaboration with Dr. Hagit Sasson-Bauer (previous lab manager) and PhD student Dana Neizni.

#2 AI-Driven Meta-Synergy: Designing Drug Combinations for Enhanced Nanomedicine in Cancer Therapy

We developed an AI-driven approach to predict and design drug combinations that exhibit meta-synergy simultaneous chemical and biological synergy at the nanoscale. Using literature-based data mining and machine learning, we identified self-assembling nanoparticle formulations with enhanced therapeutic efficacy and reduced side effects. One predicted combination showed high stability and strong tumor targeting in a preclinical model of head and neck cancer. This breakthrough demonstrates the power of integrating computational models with nanomedicine to push the boundaries of cancer therapy.

This tool (click here to explore this app) helps researchers predict and design drug combinations that could lead to more effective and stable nanomedicines for cancer therapy, utilizing meta-synergy to enhance therapeutic efficacy while reducing side effects.

This work was led by the principal author Dana Meron Azagury, in collaboration with Ben friedmann-Gluck (MSc graduate), Yuval Harris (PhD student), Yulia Avrutin (MSc graduate), Danna niezni (PhD student) and previous lab manager Dr. Hagit Sason-Bauer.
